Grant Description
Grants of up to $30,000 to Montana nonprofit organizations to support activities addressing systems change. Applicants must submit an LOI prior to submitting a full proposal. Funding is intended to assist with the general operating expenses of nonprofits working in the areas of economic development, civic engagement, local food systems, social justice, climate change, conservation, sustainability, and leadership. The purpose of the program is to support organizations with transformational ideas that are striving to create present and future change, in order to make the world more equitable, sustainable, and resilient.

Funding Categories:

  • Civic Engagement: The Foundation supports change makers working to engage, inform and activate constituents in support of a vibrant, just democracy.
  • Climate Change: The Foundation supports proactive solutions to protect the environment.
  • Conservation: The Foundation believes in conserving public lands for future generations.
  • Economic Development: The Foundation champions increased opportunity and robust, sustainable local economies.
  • Leadership: The Foundation encourages the next generation of Montana community leaders.
  • Local Food Systems: The Foundation supports local food security in Montana.
  • Social Justice: The Foundation values a vibrant, informed democracy, and promote a just, equitable society.
  • Sustainability: The Foundation believes in reducing the footprint here in Montana and around the globe.

Activities supported by grants and program-related investments must be charitable, educational, or scientific, as defined under the appropriate provisions of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations or fit the requirements for program-related investments according to the IRS. 


Additional Eligibility Criteria
Organizations described as 501 (c)(3) non-profits may apply.

High Stakes Foundation does not fund:
- Organizations that are not described as 501(c)3 non-profits
- Capital campaigns
- Projects initiated or mandated by any order of government
- Political lobbying
- General social service organizations
- Litigation, unless it supports the foundations of democracy
- Research studies including species and habitat studies even if they fall within our climate change penumbra
- Religious organizations
- Hospitals or medical clinics

Pre-Application Information
The spring grant cycle is open February 1 – March 1, 2024.

Annual application deadlines are March 1 and September 1. For emergency requests or questions, contact the Foundation.

After reviewing your application, the Foundation may invite a full proposal or simply proceed with a site visit. The Foundation will set up a Zoom call or in person discussion for all applicants who have made it through the initial review process. Please do not submit a full proposal with your application.

If your organization has received funding from the High Stakes Foundation five consecutive years, the Foundation asks that you take a year off and secure one new funding source before applying again.

Estimated Size of Grant
The Foundation typically grants between $10,000 and $30,000 and up to 10% of an organization’s general operating budget. Rarely do they award grants that exceed the $30,000 limit.
